Michael Clifford, a member of Australian boy band 5 Seconds of Summer, took a pretty nasty spill during a performance at the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards in London on Sunday.
After being introduced by Rita Ora and the show’s host, Nick Grimshaw, the boys of 5SOS took to the stage to play their hit “Hey Everybody!” but it wasn’t long before Clifford fell into the abyss a cavity in the middle of the stage.
The 19-year-old guitarist had just begun strumming the first few notes, and before the crowd knew it, he was gone. He jumped in the air, in tune with the beat, and seemingly lost his footing on the way down. Unlucky for him, the fall was captured on video (he’s on the left-hand side at 00:17).

When asked about what might have caused the fall, Clifford joked, “I was looking at Rita Ora and I was like … Hey … and I fell.”
After the performance, Clifford shared a tweet with his followers, asking, “WHY DO I ALWAYS HURT MYSELF.” Due to the fall, the teen is said to be using crutches, the Irish Examiner reports.

The musician seems to be a little accident prone, as this isn’t the first time he’s gotten hurt while performing. Back in June, Clifford’s hair caught fire during another show in London (he clearly has bad luck in that city), leaving him with burns to the head.
Here’s to hoping he stays injury-free for the next show (and maybe gets himself a helmet).
