9 Thrilling Murder Mystery Comics

Marvel’s Original Sin event comic is nearing its conclusion. By the end of August, we’ll finally know who killed the Watcher and what they have planned for the Avengers.

Original Sin Story Recap

So while we wait for the grand finale, we figured it would be fun to pick out some of the best murder mystery comics of years past. Some of these stories involve superheroes, while other are more gritty, grounded crime dramas. But all weave an intriguing tale of murder most foul.

It seems only fitting to kick off this list with a comic actually titled “Murder Mysteries.” Writer Neil Gaiman re-teamed with P. Craig Russell for this story, reuniting the team responsible for some of the best Sandman stories (“Ramadan” and “Death and Venice” among them). Murder Mysteries follows the same basic formula as so many noir-flavored tales of murder. A hard-edged detective investigates a brutal killing, only to find a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top. But in this case, the detective in question is an angel named Raguel, and he’s investigating the murder of a fellow angel. The entire tale is told by Raguel to an ordinary British man, juxtaposing Gaiman’s familiar high fantasy with a more real-world setting.
