In “Freeheld,” directed by Peter Sollett (“Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist”) and written by Ron Nyswaner (“Philadelphia”), one lesbian couple’s true story about fighting for domestic-partner rights comes to the screen.
In the film, Julianne Moore portrays real-life New Jersey police lieutenant Laurel Hester. When Laurel becomes diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, she fights to leave her pension benefits to her domestic partner Stacie Andree (Ellen Page). The film follows the events between 2002 and 2006, when Laurel and Stacie met and fell in love, up through their battle against a board of county representatives.
The film also stars Michael Shannon as Laurel’s cop partner, Steve Carell as a Jewish LGBT activist and Josh Charles. Check out the tear-inducing trailer, which hints that Moore could be a strong contender at the Oscars again this year and maybe Page, as well. “Freeheld” opens Oct. 2.
