The Last of Us Film Will Have Parts "Quite Different" To The Game

The storyline for Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed game The Last of Us is getting an overhaul for its big screen treatment.

Speaking in an interview with MCV UK, the film’s writer Neil Druckmann, who was also writer and creative director on The Last of Us, explained that “some parts [of the film] will be similar to the game and some parts will be quite different.”

“In two hours you can’t tell the same kind of story that you can in a game like The Last of Us, which is 15 hours. I’m in the middle of it now, and it’s been super difficult because there’s so much that happens in The Last of Us – even just in the cinematics – that can’t fit in a film, let alone all the gameplay in-between and dialogue,” he said.

However, Druckmann stated that the film will still retain the core relationship between Ellie and Joel, despite possibly facing other significant changes. “The first part of it was like: well, what is this story really about? It’s clearly about Joel and Ellie. What are the most important beats that we can’t lose? Start with those, and cut everything else out,” he said.

At last month’s Comic-Con, Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams was cited as a possible candidate to play the female lead in the film, although no castings have been confirmed. Spider-Man and The Evil Dead director Sam Raimi is signed on to produce the film.
