While hosting the 2015 VMAs, Miley Cyrus attempted to pull an Ellen for a younger demographic — creating an Instagram pic with a selfie stick that was full of randomness.

In the moment, it was unclear if Cyrus’ “most normal selfie ever,” as she put it, would go viral — it barely did — and so Kim Kardashian rushed over to get in the shot.

It is unclear if the moment was staged, but Cyrus did request having Kylie Jenner get in the shot just beforehand.

Jenner never joined the pic, but later in the night she did show support for Kanye West running for president on Instagram — a photo that got almost double the hearts that Cyrus’ thirsty attempt to go viral received. Then later, Jenner posted a couple photos of her simply standing at the VMAs and presenting an award that got even more hearts.

Cyrus, you tried so hard, and got so far, but in the end, it doesn’t even matter.
