Miley Cyrus became the face of MAC Cosmetics’ Viva Glam campaign in January 2015, and the controversial star’s ads are already upsetting people.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), which is the UK’s independent regulator of media advertising, recently received three complaints about a Miley Cyrus MAC ad appearing on billboards and posters that featured the star in a “suggestive” pose. The complaints were mostly concerned with “a mirrored reflection of Miley Cyrus’ crotch.”
MAC fought back against the complaints, telling the ASA the images “were not overtly sexual since they featured no nudity or any hint of sexual activity including in her facial expression.” The company also added that “the reflected images of Miley Cyrus’ crotch in the mirrors were no more than what one would ordinarily see when walking along a beach with women sunbathing or by a pool.”
Despite concluding that it was “sexually suggestive,” the ASA decided to rule against banning the ad, saying in an assessment that “they were not overtly sexual and unlikely to cause serious or widespread offense.”
Cyrus has yet to make waves with her other ad for the MAC campaign, which features the star in a blonde wig, floral crop top and polka dot shorts:
