TMNT Remains No. 1; Expendables 3 Misfires

Audiences were still interested in seeing icons of the ’80s and ’90s in action this weekend, but it wasn’t The Expendables.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remained the No. 1 movie in its second weekend in release. The heroes in a half-shell finished the weekend with an estimated $28.4 million, while Guardians of the Galaxy remained in second place with $24.7 million. TMNT has so far grossed $117.6 million domestically.

The weekend’s three major new releases all debuted to mixed results. The R-rated comedy Let’s Be Cops did best, finishing the weekend in third place place with $17.7 million. It’s made $26.1 million since debuting Wednesday.

In a franchise-worst showing, The Expendables 3 bowed in fourth place with an estimated $16.2 million, about $12.4 million behind its 2012 predecessor’s opening. Whether or not this meager showing is the result of franchise fatigue or proof that the film’s leaking on the Internet hurt it remains to be seen. The film’s PG-13 rating was supposed to draw in a wider audience than its R-rated predecessors, but that clearly wasn’t the case.
