It was a piece of simple advice issued from Kanye West that gave Angel Haze the confidence to change her sound for her new album “Back To The Woods,” she recounted in a HuffPost Live conversation on Thursday.
The singer met Kanye at a fashion party in Paris and ended up in a private space where she played him some of her music, which she “wasn’t stoked on.” She then played him some stuff she’d been writing herself, which featured her singing, and she lamented that her contract “as a rapper” would prevent her from being able to release this sort of sound.
“He’s like, ‘Well, you should just do it. If you wanna sing, you should sing. Take all the drums out of your record. Do whatever you have to to make it apparent that you want to be a singer,'” Haze described of West.
The advice came at “such a critical time,” she explained. “I was in a place where I was doing so much different stuff, trying to figure out who I was as an artist.”
And then there’s also the fact that Yeezy is one of the most successful artists in the game.
“Kanye is like a god to me,” Haze affirmed. “That just basically gave me the mental willpower to be like, ‘Yo, this is not what I’m doing.'”
