C-3PO would say there are pretty good odds there’s more than meets the eye in Duracell’s new “Star Wars” commercial.
The plot of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is still a big mystery for fans, but a new Duracell spot featuring two kids acting out a “Star Wars” battle may be riddled with secrets from the movie.
Among the highlights, we finally get to see C-3PO with his brand new red arm. The new appendage was revealed in promotional images and toys, but now we get to see it in action.
Perhaps an even bigger reveal may be a little girl dressed up as the mysterious character Rey. Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, is featured in the trailer, but little is known about her. Even her last name is a secret, which director J.J. Abrams says is intentional. Rumors have been swirling that she’s somehow related to Luke Skywalker or Han Solo, and the commercial may hint at that, too.
In the ad, the girl uses Force abilities on stormtroopers and even wields a green lightsaber, a color the Jedi are known to use. With partnerships like these, there’s no doubt Disney had input in the spot and may have even discussed some plot points with Duracell, which is how the Disney-owned Marvel also handles merchandising with partners like Hasbro.
Because the franchise and partners want accuracy, these relationships can sometimes lead to small leaks from the film, as seen with a LEGO “Ant-Man” toy revealing we’d see Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) with an Ant-Man suit on at some point in the movie and the previously mentioned C-3PO toy with the red arm.
Does the spot actually reveal some secrets about Rey? Even interviews with the stars of “Force Awakens” aren’t telling us much, so at this point we’ll take what we can get.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” hits theaters Dec. 18.
