Washington Redskins Bring Back Insensitive Thanksgiving Tradition For Another Year

The Internet is not impressed with the Washington Redskins’ “Happy Thanksgiving” message on Twitter.

Wishing you and your family a Happy #Thanksgiving. pic.twitter.com/qI3U7hbGhK

— Washington Redskins (@Redskins) November 26, 2015

The tweet is more than a little ironic, given that “redskins” is a racial slur for Native Americans, and Thanksgiving is a holiday that supposedly commemorates a day of peace between Native Americans and the Pilgrims. (Of course, as any historian will tell you, the truth is a lot more complicated.)

The insensitivity was not lost on the many people who retweeted and replied to the message.

Nothing says thanksgiving like established bigotry. #HailToTheRacists https://t.co/VxraDdVpMF

“Happy Thanksgiving!” *continues to have a racist mascot of the people the holiday is actually celebrating* https://t.co/BnK6EnYeL7

Now we just need Trump to hit us with a “Feliz Navidad” and we’ll be good @Redskins

Apparently, the team didn’t get the message last year.
