The New York Times Magazine has once again shown how beautifully a story can be told using virtual reality.

The magazine takes its audience above the Los Angeles skyline in “Take Flight,” a virtual reality film that accompanies the annual “Great Performers” compilation, which highlights the top 10 performers of the year.

Directed by Daniel Askill — the filmmaker behind Sia’s music videos — “Take Flight” stars actors like Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. The actors recreate a number of “flight” scenes from iconic films: For instance, Lily Tomlin re-enacts the famous bike scene from “E.T.”

The New York Times has led the charge in using virtual reality technology to transport readers to the place where news is actually happening. In October, the magazine released a virtual reality film called “The Displaced,” which followed the life of three children caught up in the global refugee crisis. Following last month’s terrorist attacks in Paris, the Times also used virtual reality to highlight Parisians’ resilience in “Vigils in Paris.”

The Times launched its virtual reality app, NYT VR, in October and partnered with Google to distribute Google Cardboard viewers, a low-cost cardboard viewing device, to over 1 million of the paper’s subscribers.
