The first clip has arrived from Australian horror sensation The Babadook, in which Essie Davis reads the story of titular bogeyman, Mr. Babadook.

Davis plays Amelia, a newly single mother haunted by the violent death of her husband, and struggling to cope with a young son plagued by a mysterious and sinister figure.

When an eerie storybook turns up in the house, the boy is convinced it tells the story of the man from his dreams. And while Amelia is initially sceptical, strange occurrences start to sway her opinion…

It’s a nastily effective little teaser, with a significant amount of tension created by little more than the turning pages of a storybook. Consider us well and truly intrigued…

Directed by Jennifer Kent and co-starring Noah Wiseman, Barbara West and Daniel Henshall, The Babadook will open in the UK on 24 October 2014.
