Chelsea Handler may not want to sit with controversial celebrities, but she does want to sit with Netflix.
The comedian is leaving her E! late night talk show later this year for reasons she said involved dealing with celebrities like Justin Bieber and the Kardashians. She’s finally found a new home for her talk show at Netflix. In a statement released by the streaming service, Handler said, “If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested.” She went on to add how Netflix turned out to be a perfect fit for her. “I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move.”
It will be interesting to see what the streaming service does with their very first original talk show, and how exactly that format will work for an on-demand service. Netflix said they are “looking forward to reimagining the late night talk show” and that Handler’s unnamed show will still consist of her signature style — her unfiltered commentary, entertainment news and guest interviews. We doubt, though, that Bieber will be invited.
In addition to the talk show, Handler will also be collaborating with Netflix on five comedy specials into next year, including stand-up and docu-comedy specials.
