Though you may not hear much music on MTV these days, radio personality Mark Goodman helped build the groundbreaking music channel as one of the five original “video jockeys” back in 1981.
Goodman, who you may remember from the show “The Week In Rock,” reflected on his time at the the channel and how the hiring of Rolling Stone’s Kurt Loder prompted his exit.
Loder, who “was quick to slag” MTV while writing for the music magazine, jumped at the opportunity at MTV and shook things up, Goodman explained.
“Kurt knows his stuff. He’s a smart guy. I just thought he made horrible television, that’s all,” Goodman told HuffPost Live host Ricky Camilleri.
With the addition of Loder, Goodman found himself much less involved at MTV.
“What I loved to do was talk to these people, talk to these artists. I loved traveling and going to meet them,” he said. “Well, [Loder] was going to be doing all that, so that would relegate me to just doing VJ segments, which was fine, but not the only thing that I would like to do.”
Goodman joined HuffPost Live to discuss “The Midnight Special Collector’s Edition,” a DVD set with hours of performance footage from the greatest musical acts of the 1970s.
