Billy Corgan Opens Up About Relationship With Courtney Love: 'We Connected Very Deeply'

The dramatic two decade off-and-on love affair between Courtney Love and Billy Corgan has been thoroughly documented, thanks in large part to them (see: here, here and here).

But in a HuffPost Live conversation on Wednesday to promote the new Smashing Pumpkins’ album “Monuments to an Elegy,” the singer said the hatchet has finally been buried.

“She is who she is,” he told host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani. “I love and accept her. It doesn’t mean I like everything she say and does, nor do I want to spend a year with her in an elevator.”

Love and Corgan dated before her 1992 marriage to Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, and they reportedly dated again after Cobain’s death. Corgan was married to artist Chris Fabian from 1993 to 1997.

Reflecting on the love they once shared, Corgan explained that it boiled down to “two artists, probably before their insanity hit, finding some sort of zeitgeist between one another in terms of artwork and what we wanted to accomplish.”

And while the two are now on good terms, the musician recognizes a change in their dynamic.

“We connected very deeply and once it spun off and where we spun off — we’ve never had that same relationship again,” he concluded.
