Before David O. Russell made “The Fighter,” “Silver Linings Playbook” or “American Hustle,” he directed a troubled little comedy called “Nailed.” Written by former “Saturday Night Live” scribe Kristin Gore, “Nailed” stars Jessica Biel as a waitress who’s accidentally shot in the head with a nail and joins forces with a contemptible politician (Jake Gyllenhaal) in a crusade to reform health care after she can’t afford the nail’s removal. The movie couldn’t sustain its financing, and production was halted four times back in 2008. Russell was missing a crucial scene, and in 2012 the producers said the film probably won’t open “in this lifetime.”
Fast-forward to February 2015. Russell has since withdrawn from the project, so the directing credit goes to “Stephen Greene,” a likely pseudonym, and the final cut is the work of producers. Oh, and it’s no longer “Nailed.” It’s now called “Accidental Love.” The trailer doesn’t look like the same David O. Russell who made “The Fighter” and “American Hustle” — instead, it draws from the director’s earlier comedies, particularly the screwball “Flirting with Disaster.” The movie opens Feb. 20 and premieres via on-demand services on Feb. 10. Catherine Keener, James Marsden, Tracy Morgan, James Brolin and Bill Hader also star. Watch the trailer below.
