Rapper Scarface Opens Up About His Battle With Depression

Rapper Brad “Scarface” Jordan opened up to HuffPost Live about being diagnosed with manic depression, which is detailed in his memoir Diary of a Madman: The Geto Boys, Life, Death, and the Roots of Southern Rap.

Jordan, who ascended to hip-hop fame with the rap group Geto Boys, said his experience with mental health issues began when he was just 12 or 13 years old.

“It was serious, man. I wanted to die back then. And if you ask me why … I can honestly tell you I don’t know. I have no idea. Maybe I felt worthless,” he told host Marc Lamont Hill. Luckily, he explained, he moved beyond those thoughts.

While his mental health has improved in recent years, Jordan says he is taking the journey one day at a time.

“Some days are better than others,” he said. “Even right now, yeah. But I know I want to live.”
