Last week, Miley Cyrus announced the Happy Hippie Foundation, which benefits homeless and LGBTQ kids, and as part of its launch, she released a Backyard Sessions video featuring Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace. She joined Grace (and Joan Jett) for a acoustic performance of the Replacements’ “Androgynous” and Against Me!’s “True Trans Soul Rebel.”
It’s the best-known track off Against Me!’s fantastic 2014 album “Transgender Dysphoria Blues,” a collection of songs mostly written after Grace came out as transgender in 2012.
With lyrics like “Does God bless your transsexual heart, true trans soul rebel?,” it’s a moving track without the bells and whistles. Paired with Cyrus’ voice and and a no frills backyard production, it sends a powerful message to Cyrus’ fans about her dedication to supporting LGBTQ teens.
And here’s Cyrus, Grace and Jett’s performance of “Androgynous.”
