Chris Pratt Has The Best Response To Our Culture's Obsession With Weight Loss

“For this movie, I did have to take care of myself for a while, but that’s quickly going to go away.”

In case you haven’t heard — and at this point in the media blitz, it’s hard to imagine you haven’t — Chris Pratt lost quite a bit of weight to play the chiseled-abbed superhero Star-Lord in “Guardians Of The Galaxy.”

Throughout his press tour, he’s gamely discussed his (slightly extreme) fitness experience: 4,000 calories a day and a workout routine that ran the gamut from hot yoga to P90X.

But during his recent appearance on “The Late Show,” Pratt seemed ready to change the conversation.

When Letterman scoffed at the idea that Pratt ever weighed 290 pounds, he came back with the perfect, straight-faced response. “That is the truth,” he said, without missing a beat, “I weighed 390 pounds.”

Notice the change?

Letterman and the audience laughed, but Pratt wasn’t done. He paused a moment, mid-sentence, as if calculating. “I was … 10 pounds below 500 pounds. That’s almost one quarter of a ton. It’s really impressive.”

But then what was Pratt’s weight when in costume playing Star-Lord on “Guardians”?

The actor deflected again, still completely deadpan. “When the cameras were rolling, I was 113 pounds. And four pounds of that was spray tan.”

Kudos to Pratt for finding such a hilarious way to sidestep questions he didn’t have to — and may have not wanted to — answer. We were chuckling right along with the audience.
