Paul Feig has already established himself in the realm of female-driven comedies, and now it looks like he might be bringing some women into the ghost-catching business.
According to Variety, the director of “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat” is in talks with Sony to direct a “Ghostbusters” reboot. The trade reports that the film will most likely feature female comedy actresses in the lead ghostbusting roles. Earlier on Saturday, August 2, however, The Hollywood Reporter claimed that Feig was in talks to direct “Ghostbusters 3.”
The third follow-up to the 1984 and 1989 “Ghostbusters” movies has long been in development at Sony and previously had original director Ivan Reitman attached to the project. However, following the recent death of “Ghostbusters” star Harold Ramis, Reitman bowed out from directing. A handful of other directors have been rumored to taking on the third film, including “Lego Movie” directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who soon after dropped out, and “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer.
It’s still unclear whether Feig’s in talks to direct a third “Ghostbusters” film or a female reboot. A representative for Feig would not provide an on-record comment when contacted by The Huffington Post, but added that it is in no way confirmed as his next film. Feig has an ongoing relationship at Fox where they have several new scripts they’re trying to put together and is also directing Melissa McCarthy in their new comedy “Spy.”
