ESPN Turns 8 Athletes Into Marvel Superheroes In New Series

Let’s be honest, some of the feats athletes are able to accomplish seem not of this world. So it’s only fitting that ESPN teamed up with Marvel Entertainment to give some sports stars the superhero treatment.

The network will premiere its new eight-part series, “1 of 1 – Origins” on Friday, July 10, which will pair each short docu-style film with Marvel art and animation to profile different athletes, following the rise of each with brand-new interviews.

Courtesy of ESPN and Marvel, The Huffington Post has been given an exclusive look into some of the athletes’ new Marvel looks.

The first film’s subject is San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, and will air Friday, July 10, during ESPN2’s “His & Hers,” to coincide with San Diego Comic-con. The other films will be featured throughout ESPN programming as well as on the network’s 30 for 30 Facebook page.

In addition to Kaepernick, the other athletes featured are former professional soccer player Brandi Chastain (premiering July 13), MLB player Bryce Harper (July 13), NBA player Dwight Howard (July 14), snowboarder Amy Purdy (July 15), golfer Phil Mickelson (July 15), driver Danica Patrick (July 16), and skateboarder Tony Hawk (July 17). A feature-length documentary, “1 of 1 – Genesis,” which premiered on Netflix in March, will also air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET on July 14.
