'Angry Birds 2' Is Officially Coming This Summer

The birds are back. Again.

On Wednesday, game-maker Rovio announced that “Angry Birds 2″ will be released on July 30. The company did not say which platforms the game will be available on.

The name is something of a misnomer. The “Angry Birds” franchise now encompasses a sprawling collection of spin-offs and licensed titles, all of which could rightfully be considered sequels to the original game from 2009. There’s “Angry Birds Rio,” “Angry Birds Star Wars,” “Angry Birds Space,” “Angry Birds Epic” and more.

While the games are perhaps best associated with smartphones, versions are available on almost any modern piece of technology imaginable: They’re on video game consoles, Roku devices, PC and so on — there was even a dedicated Chrome version at one point. Of course, that’s not even counting the mountain of “Angry Birds”-branded toys and board games.

But flooding the market hasn’t worked out so well for Rovio. The company recently reported a staggering 73 percent decline in profits, even as mobile gaming enjoys remarkable growth. That said, the company is still moving forward with a 3D animated movie, which is expected to be released next year.

Rovio says “Angry Birds” games have been downloaded 3 billion times.
