Bourne 5 delayed until summer 2016

Fans of the Bourne franchise will have to wait a little longer for the next instalment in the series, with Universal pushing the fifth film back by almost a year.

The as-yet-untitled project had initially been pencilled in to arrive on 14 August 2015, only for Universal to announce that the film will now open in the US on 15 July 2016.

With production yet to have begun on the film, it seems that Universal are currently unhappy with the state of the script, having recently drafted in Andrew Baldwin to perform some work on it.

The studio was clearly not satisfied with the version turned in by original writer Anthony Packham, and it seems as though it will take Baldwin longer than anticipated to lick it into shape.

Just how this loss of momentum will affect the film’s performance at the box office remains to be seen, but it is at least encouraging to see that Universal is willing to take the time to get it right.

Justin Lin is in place to direct the film, with Jeremy Renner set to return for a second time as super-spy, Aaron Cross. Extra time now available for Universal to talk Matt Damon into that cameo…
