The music world was abuzz with excitement Monday when “Wish I Was Here,” a dreamy ballad by British band Coldplay and American singer-songwriter Cat Power, debuted on NPR.

“It seems the unlikeliest of collaborations,” NPR wrote on its website of the title track for Zach Braff’s upcoming film “Wish I Was Here.” “And still, what happens in this recording … feels so right.”

Braff, who directed and starred in the movie, told NPR that the song — a minimal, mesmerizing piano number produced by Coldplay and featuring Cat Power on vocals and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin on background vocals — is his favorite on the film’s star-studded soundtrack, which also boasts new songs by Bon Iver and The Shins.
The “Wish I Was Here” soundtrack will be released July 15. The film is slated to premiere July 18. Watch the movie trailer here:
