David Carr's Daughter, Erin Lee Carr, Recalls Her Dad's Life Lessons

The February passing of David Carr had the media world sobbing for both the loss of a valued journalist and also a cherished mentor to young writers.

Erin Lee Carr, a documentarian and also his daughter, counts herself among his mentees, telling HuffPost Live on Friday that every time the two spoke, “he would expect me to take notes.”

“I have a Google document of all the things he taught me that I can keep with me,” she continued. “It only has 30 statements on it, but at this point I can write down thousands.”

Some of the lessons include “don’t eat hot dogs off the street,” and “street meat: never a good idea.”

Another memorable one the “Thought Crimes” director invoked was “Don’t be the first to speak in a room, but if you are, say something important.”

“There’s just a lot of those things I’ll always keep with me,” she said. “The last five years of our dynamic was a lot about mentorship.”

“Thought Crimes” premieres on HBO Monday, May 11 at 9 p.m. EST.
