David Letterman's Final 'Late Show' Had Its Biggest Audience In Two Decades

David Letterman signed off on Wednesday night with a major bang. The host’s final “Late Show” episode not only featured a slew of big-name celebrities, but also drew in the largest audience Letterman has seen in 20 years.

CBS executive Chris Ender tweeted on Thursday that Letterman’s last show had 13.7 million viewers, the most since his post-Olympics show on Feb. 25, 1994, which drew in 15.5 million viewers. It was the most-watched broadcast on TV Wednesday night, beating out every other primetime show. The high viewership also helped “The Late Late Show” break a record with 4 million viewers, the highest the show’s had with any host.

Letterman fell short of beating Jay Leno’s goodbye record, however. Leno’s second exit from “The Tonight Show” had an audience of 14.6 million. Still, Letterman went out on top with his favorite band playing his favorite song.
