After so many years of constant twists and turns, it was only fitting for “Degrassi” to stir up a little drama of its own.

“Degrassi,” whose 14th season will be its last on TeenNick, has not been cancelled, as was initially reported. Instead, the long-running drama will move to Netflix and Canada’s Family Channel in 2016. The deal includes a 20-episode order and a forward-thinking new subtitle, “Next Class.”

Co-creator and executive producer Linda Schuyler said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly that the move will be another step forward for the Degrassi universe, which started with “The Kids on Degrassi Street” in 1979. “We are energized and excited to work with Family Channel as we tell stories for the new post-millennial teen cohort known as Generation Z, most of whom weren’t even born when Degrassi returned in 2001,” she said.

Netflix celebrated the news on Twitter, announcing that fans will “meet the Next Class” in 2016.

The high-school soap opera is Canada’s longest-running television drama. The show received a Peabody Award in 2010 for its portrayal of a transgender teen.

“Degrassi” also famously launched the career of rapper Drake, who can now fall back on acting once again in case the whole music thing doesn’t work out.

TeenNick’s final episodes of “Degrassi” will air on weeknights at 9 p.m. EST beginning July 20.
