Employees at gossip site Gawker are trying to unionize, the site’s Hamilton Nolan announced in a post Thursday. A “large group” of editorial staffers met with union organizers at the Writers Guild of America East on Wednesday, Nolan said, adding that he decided to announce the organizing effort before word got out otherwise.
“The online media industry makes real money. It’s now possible to find a career in this industry, rather than just a fleeting job,” Nolan wrote. “An organized work force is part of growing up. I fully expect that Gawker Media will emerge from this experience stronger than it has ever been.”
