Where is the last place you would ever expect to find “Transparent” star Gaby Hoffmann? If your answer was something along the lines of, “at Michael Jackson’s ranch with Nicole Richie, Kim Kardashian and a pair of chimps,” we’ve got news for you: your imagination is reality.

When Hoffmann dropped by HuffPost Live on Tuesday to chat about the second season of her Amazon hit, host Alex Miranda showed the actress a photo from the early ’90s that depicts a duck-faced quintet of preteen girls, including Hoffmann, Kardashian and Richie. The picture was passed around online after Kardashian posted it to her website in 2011, but watching Hoffmann tell the story of that day is a treat all its own.

“We weren’t friends,” she said of her famous-in-the-future posse. “This is a totally strange, bizarre, anomalous moment.”

Hoffmann explained that as a kid, she moved for two years from New York to Los Angeles, where she attended a “crazy private school” and lived “an alternate reality life” in the suburbs.

“In those two years, I happened to be in school with these girls — at least Nicole. I don’t remember that Kim Kardashian actually went to our school,” Hoffmann said. “But Nicole Richie invited me to her birthday party, and it was at Michael Jackson’s Neverland! That’s where this picture was taken.”

The King of Pop, who was Richie’s godfather, wasn’t in attendance, but Hoffmann found an equally exciting point of interest at the ranch.

“I did get to meet A.J. and Bubbles, the chimps. I actually didn’t care that much that Michael wasn’t there because I got to meet the chimps,” she said.

Hoffmann said she doesn’t hang around with Richie and Kardashian anymore, and she’s actually perplexed to this day about why she was included in Richie’s birthday extravaganza.

“I wasn’t even really friends with Nicole. I don’t know why she invited me to this party, and I don’t really even remember ever talking to Kim Kardashian,” she said. “But yes, this picture — look at us. Oh my god, my eyebrows were so plucked.”
