Even an Oscar winner like Helen Hunt feels the immense challenges of being a woman in Hollywood, she told HuffPost Live on Thursday.
When host Alyona Minkovski asked about the idea that fewer and fewer roles are available to actresses as they get older, Hunt argued it’s not about age but about being a woman in general.
“What are the great movies for younger women where they’re the protagonist [being] made now? You know what I mean? The whole thing — there’s no equal rights amendment. We’re fucked,” Hunt said.
The actress added that she sees value in exploring sexuality — like in the 2012 film “The Sessions,” in which she played real-life sex surrogate Cheryl Cohen Greene — but she takes issue with the objectification of women to sell things that have nothing to do with truthful human stories.
“I certainly drive around and I’m tired of the billboard where she’s barely in her underwear and they’re selling, you know, a watch or something,” Hunt said. “I’m over it, to be honest.”
Hunt has taken the quest for great roles into her own hands with her new film “Ride,” which she wrote, directed and stars in as a mother who learns to surf in an effort to reconnect with her son.
