With Caitlyn Jenner, Laverne Cox and “Transparent” making headlines in Hollywood and beyond, there’s no question that 2015 was a game changing year in terms of transgender visibility in pop culture.
But as the year winds to a close, trans rights advocates and actors aren’t ready to rest on their laurels. As trans adult film performer and producer Buck Angel explains, it’s time to focus on future entertainment milestones.
Produced by Leighton Woodhouse, this TakePart video shows Angel joining fellow performers and personalities Scott Turner Schofield, Drian Juarez, Ian Harvie and Jazzmun for a look at the evolution of transgender characters in Hollywood, from 1994’s “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” to 2014’s “Transparent.”
Of course, there’s still more work to be done. Pointing to Jared Leto’s Oscar-winning turn in 2013’s “The Dallas Buyers Club,” Harvie notes, “Sometimes producers pick people to do trans roles because the ‘wow’ factor of someone transforming into this character…that ‘wow’ factor is what they think is also gonna win the award.”
Here’s to hoping the future will bring even greater — and more accurate — portrayals of the trans community to the big screen!
