Kobe Bryant Supports Caitlyn Jenner And Her Journey

When Caitlyn Jenner takes the stage at the ESPYs tonight, she can count Kobe Bryant among her many, many supporters.

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar told TMZ in a video published Wednesday morning that it’s important that anyone — be it Caitlyn or someone else — feel like their true self when they look in the mirror.

“I think people have to be comfortable being themselves,” Bryant said. “Doesn’t matter what walk of life you’re in, man, you gotta be comfortable being you. You got to be comfortable in your own skin.”

“You got to be comfortable being who you are, man — that’s the philosophy behind it all,” he reiterated later. “Be comfortable being you.”

The transgender community continues to face large amounts of discrimination and harassment in the U.S., showcased by the negative backlash Jenner received first when she opened up about her decision to transition and then again when ESPN decided to honor her with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, which some said she was undeserving of.

Kanye West made similar remarks to Bryant’s when his wife and Jenner’s stepdaughter, Kim Kardashian, was first grappling with Caitlyn’s decision to transfer. According to Jenner, Kanye told Kim: “Look, I can be married to the most beautiful woman in the world, and I am. I can have the most beautiful little daughter in the world, and I have that. But I’m nothing if I can’t be me. If I can’t be true to myself, they don’t mean anything.”
