There’s no denying it – our culture is obsessed with nostalgia. Something about being reminded of our childhood rubs our brain in just the right kind of way that makes us all happy on the inside. Naturally, the guys responsible for pumping out media and figurines in the realm of pop culture have taken note and we’re seeing a resurgence of familiar brands. It’s 2017 and I’m looking forward to watching a new episode of Dragonball Z this weekend and seeing Power Rangers in theaters. Never has the Robin Williams “what year is it” meme been more appropriate. Wrestling too has entered the fray into feeding our nostalgic needs.
For fans of collecting wrestling figures back in the day, they may remember Hasbro’s legendary line of wrestling figures. These things were everywhere – heck I’ve got a suitcase at home filled with about 30 or so figures tucked away somewhere. (Super awkward if those figures pull a Toy Story and come to life at night.) There was something archaic but undeniably classic about the figures – just seeing there silhouette you knew you were dealing with a wrestling figure. Well great news – Mattel has created a series of figures that resemble the legendary Hasbro Line. “WWE Retro Figures” look everything like you might imagine them to be. Bending and painted exactly like the figures of old, these guys fit right in with the old figures to create a seamless transition and addition to any collection. Even the artwork on the boxes look similar to the old figures, sporting a similar WWE logo and poor resolution photo of the wrestler. Currently a Walmart exclusive, the collection sports a lineup containing wrestlers such as John Cena, Roman Reigns and Brock Lesner. The beauty of these figures is that generations of fans both old and new can enjoy them. I can’t recommend these enough for any wrestling fan, now all the WWE needs to do is release some vintage ice cream bars!
