Miley Cyrus made a triumphant return to the VMAs one year after she redefined giant teddy bears, foam fingers and butts everywhere with her performance of “We Can’t Stop.” Last year she and Robin Thicke got censored for their twerk-tastic show, but this year Cyrus walked the red carpet and admitted to pre-show hosts Lucy Hale and Sway that she “retwired” the twerk.
Cyrus also spoke about her collaborations with The Flaming Lips. “I live to be in the studio,” she said. “That’s my favorite part.” Cyrus also said that her next album could take up to five years to come out. “It’s not about twerking. It’s about the music.”
Her music video for “Wrecking Ball,” shot by Terry Richardson, was nominated for Video of the Year and Best Direction.
