A long list of print, digital and broadcast news outlets have been nominated for GLAAD’s 26th annual Media Awards, the organization announced on its website Wednesday.
The awards also recognize film, TV shows and music, and honors those in the media who have strived for “fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.”
Pieces from CNN, Al Jazeera America, Nickelodeon and two from MSNBC — one from “Morning Joe” and one from “Ronan Farrow Daily” — are up for Outstanding TV Journalism – Newsmagazine. MSNBC’s “Melissa Harris-Perry” and “MSNBC Live” also garnered nominations in the Outstanding TV Journalism Segment category, along with CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” Fusion’s “Alicia Menendez Tonight,” and ABC News’ “This Week.”
A number of longstanding print publications such as The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, New York and GQ are nominated for awards, with Essence, Glamour, Out, Sports Illustrated and Time competing for Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage.
Katy Steinmetz’s “The Transgender Tipping Point,” which put “Orange Is the New Black” star Laverne Cox on the cover of Time, is also up for Outstanding Magazine Article.
Digital media is represented, too, with distinctions being awarded for excellence in digital journalism, multimedia, and blogs. BuzzFeed, The Root, Vice News and MSNBC.com are among those nominated.
“For nearly 30 years, the GLAAD Media Awards have raised the bar for inclusion in news and entertainment, transforming LGBT representation in media and moving the dial for acceptance across the globe,” GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. “It’s been a remarkable year for equality, and nowhere is that more evident than in the visibility LGBT people have gained across media.”
