The upcoming Silent Hill game that Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima and Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro are working on together is going for an extreme scare-factor. During yesterday’s special livestream, which was focused primarily on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Kojima also took some time to outline his plans for the new Silent Hill game.
Kojima said, through a translator, that he originally wanted to design the new Silent Hill game–which he is calling Silent Hills–so that it would make you “pee your pants.” But after speaking more with del Toro, the pair decided to ramp up the scare-intensity. Now, the studio says you should have an extra pair of pants at the ready when you play the game because, “We are aiming for a game that will make you sh*t your pants.”
He went on to explain that there is a danger with making a game that is too scary. For a scary movie or a frightening amusement park ride, people can just close their eyes and wait until it ends. But in the context of games, people will stop playing if they are too scared; but Kojima isn’t concerned about this.
“If you don’t want to continue playing through the game, so be it. We don’t care,” he said. “We are aiming for a game that will make you s**t your pants. So please make sure you have a [change of clothes].” Kojima also joked that the limited edition for Silent Hills will come with a pair of pants.
Silent Hills was originally revealed this week as horror game P.T. (“playable teaser”), which was launched as a free demo on the PlayStation Store with almost no explanation as to what it was. Kojima admitted that P.T. was an experiment in making a game with Konami’s own FOX Engine. But the graphics had to be pared down so people wouldn’t know Kojima Productions made it, he said.
He went on to say that he was surprised that it was so quickly discovered that P.T. was in fact Silent Hills; he expected that it might take a week to be solved. Kojima also said that one of his goals for the P.T. experiment was to bring people together in an effort to discover the truth.
