As expected, producer Michael Bay’s reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles debuted atop the domestic box office this weekend, ousting reigning champ Guardians of the Galaxy.
Ninja Turtles scored an estimated $65 million, the biggest domestic opening ever for a TMNT movie (not adjusted for inflation). Guardians slipped to second place with $41.5 million. Internationally, Ninja Turtles made an additional $28.7 million while Guardians has now earned over $137 million abroad.
The weekend’s other major new releases included: Into the Storm, which opened in third place with an estimated $18 million; The Hundred-Foot Journey opened in fourth place with $11.1 million; and Step Up All In, which bowed in sixth place with a franchise-low of $6.6 million.
