Earlier this week, reports began to surface that “Pretty Little Liars” would end after its seventh season, cuing a vast national WAIL.
But on Wednesday morning, series creator I. Marlene King clarified her comments from the Variety interview that sparked the devastation on Twitter.
In the interview published Tuesday — in advance of the show’s Season 6b premiere in January — King said, “I think that this story when we’re back will end next year at the at end of Season 7.”
While her comments appeared to confirm that she does not plan to carry the show forward after next year, King says she actually just meant that the storyline kicking off in 6b will wrap after Season 7. Not the entire series.
What I said was “This Uber A story that starts on January 12 will end when season 7 ends.” I did not say PLL will end. Just sayin 4 real.

Since “Pretty Little Liars” was renewed for both a sixth and seventh season back in June 2014, those involved with the show have teased the latter would be its last. But in August, King made comments suggesting she’d be open to creating an eighth season and movie.
Turns out those dreams have not yet died.
To be honest, it does still feel pretty likely that the original “Liars” cast will move on to other projects after Season 7, so the end of the classic “PLL” era could still be nigh. But an inkling is much more hopeful than a straight-up confirmation!
After all, it was just announced that actor David Coussins would join the show in 6b as Hanna’s fellow fashionista fiancé, so who knows, maybe he can helm a Season 8 about an evil stalker tormenting young employees at a prestigious women’s magazine (which is already the show’s aesthetic).
We’d also be shocked (read: DEVASTATED) if a movie starring the original liars wasn’t somewhere in the series’ future.
As we wait for answers to these pressing industry mysteries, we can at least distract ourselves by fretting/constantly tweeting about Season 6b and 7. There is order to the world!
See y’all in January!
Pretty Little Liars Season 6b returns to ABC Family Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016.
