British actor and film director Richard Attenborough has died at the age of 90, with his family reporting news of his passing away on Sunday.

The celebrated actor is famous for his roles in films such Jurassic Park and The Great Escape. Attenborough died at lunchtime on Sunday, according to a statement from his son, according to the BBC.

Attenborough won two Academy Awards for Gandhi in 1983. He has also won four BAFTA Awards and four Golden Globe Awards.

He was also a world-renowned actor, starring in classic roles such as Brighton Rock, The Great Escape, 10 Rillington Place, Miracle on 34th Street and Jurassic Park among many others.

In August 2008, Attenborough was admitted to hospital with heart problems and was fitted with a pacemaker.

In December 2008 he suffered a stroke, which resulted in him falling badly, and he was admitted to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, southwest London. During that episode he in fact went into a coma, but came out within a few days.

In March 2013, due to deteriorating health, Attenborough moved into a nursing home in London to be with his wife Sheila Sim – otherwise known as Sheila Beryl Grant Attenborough, Lady Attenborough.

Attenborough’s marriage to actress Sheila Sim was one of the longest-running in Hollywood. The couple wed in 1945 and had three children together, including theater director Michael Attenborough.

He was left devastated in 2004 when the Asian tsunami tragically killed his 14-year-old granddaughter Lucy Holland, as well as his daughter and her mother-in-law, both called Jane.

Richard Attenborough died Sunday August 24, 2014 at the age of 90.
