One of the problems with digital comics right now that the files are usually protected by DRM and can’t be copied, backed up, or re-organized to the user’s liking. If you want to read your entire Comixology library without an Internet connection, you’re pretty much out of luck. This is a trend that has slowly been changing. Small publishers like Brian K Vaughan’s Panel Syndicate and Mark Waid’s Thrillbent have been making their books available for download as PDF or CBZ files, and even Image has been rolling out their catalog in DRM-free form.

That trend took a major step forward this week as Comixology announced they’ll begin offering DRM-free backups of many titles. Users will now find a tab called “My Backups” in the “My Books” section of the Comixology site/app. Comics with available DRM-free options can then be downloaded in either PDF or CBZ format. These formats don’t support Comixology’s handy “Guided View” feature that displays a comic panel by panel, but the files can be copied and transferred to your heart’s desire.
