'Sex And The City' Author Candace Bushnell's Unexpected Advice For Where To Find Your Own Mr. Big

Carrie Bradshaw may have found her Mr. Big within the confines of New York City, but Candace Bushnell advises ladies to follow a different course from her world-famous protagonist in pursuit of their own beaus.

When HuffPost Live asked the Sex and the City author how city singles should go about hunting down their very own Mr. Big, she did not hesitate: “Honestly … you’ve gotta go to Aspen.”

“I am sorry to say this, but there is a real mathematical reality to dating and mating rituals,” she explained, boiling it down to the sheer ratio of males to females in any given location.

If there are more women than men, then the men are less likely to get into a committed relationship. If there are more men than women, I hate to say this, but in a guy’s mind, the women become more valuable. If they want to have a woman, they have to kind of go along with what the woman wants. In places where there are more men than women, you probably won’t have a hard time finding a committed relationship. In a place where there are more women than men, it’s just the numbers. The numbers are kind of against you.

But just as the “Sex and the City” novel and TV show depicted, New York’s smattering of great ladies — and their female friendships — offers something just as valuable among the drought of bachelors.

“What’s always been so inspiring about the city is that you have all these wonderful relationships with your girlfriends and with other women,” Bushnell said. “New York City is about the women. I find that women in New York are so interesting, smart, funny, together. They’re really, really great.”

And it was “exactly the same environment,” she said, “when I started writing ‘Sex and the City’ back in 1994.”

Bushnell’s new book Killing Monica is available now.
