I have to keep this review short, as I’m in the midst of a lot of SDCC prep – and it’s already going up a day late, sorry! – but this was the best issue yet of the Son of Dathomir story.
While the last issue was more action-heavy, having Dooku and Grievous captured by Maul led to some very cool and compelling new scenarios that ultimately were even more exciting, in the scheme of things. A lot of really strong character scenes occurred in this issue, bringing up many issues of allegiance when it comes to these characters – plus a very interesting reveal about Darth Maul’s history that put things in a new perspective in terms of The Clone Wars story.
I’ve been critical of Juan Frigeri’s art in this series, but this issue showed some notable improvement in that regard. The visuals were more dynamic and one action sequence in particular, involving Grievous showing off just how deadly he can be, was much more visceral and evocative than has been the norm here – not just because of what Grievous did but because Frigeri did a better job conveying the action.
