The Wicked and the Divine #1 Review

Whenever Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie team up, a good time is almost always guaranteed. Their recent work on Young Avengers was unparalleled in terms of its portrayal of modern teen superheroes. Their early work on Phonogram is nothing short of haunting. Throughout their careers, there’s a continuous exploration of what music means to an individual and its importance in a grander sense. This query is taken to the extreme in The Wicked and the Divine, which poses an intriguing, if not somewhat ridiculous, question: What if pop stars were literal gods?

It’s a humorous and socially relevant concept, but it’s treated with the utmost legitimacy in this book. Gillen and McKelvie have made it clear both through their previous work and their public personas that they hold a legitimate fascination with pop music and the idolatry that tends to come with it. So really, this is the perfect concept for them to tackle in a comic.
