There's A Mistake In 'Straight Outta Compton' You Probably Didn't Notice

It won the box office last weekend, but N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton” struck out in baseball cap authenticity.

A scene features Eazy-E (played by Jason Mitchell), in 1986, wearing a Chicago White Sox hat with a design that didn’t appear on the team’s headgear until the 1990s.

A White Sox official told the Chicago Tribune that “the White Sox black cap and logo, as seen in the movie trailer, was introduced in September 1990 by the organization.”

The Chicago Sun-Times notes that the White Sox hat used in the critically acclaimed movie looks way better cinematically than the version actually worn in 1986. Here’s Tom Seaver wearing one of the old hats during the ’86 season:

The Internet had its fun with the blooper:

Kelli Jones, the film’s costume designer, said the film used “small creative license.”

“I think it’s fucking hilarious that people are making a big deal about that,” she told Uproxx.

Yahoo showed a picture of the real Eazy-E wearing the hat worn in the film, but reported that the photo dates to 1993.

Error charged to “Straight Outta Compton.”
