Toni Braxton loves the Fox hit “Empire” for more than just its entertainment value. In an interview with HuffPost Live on Wednesday, she said the series’ representation of the inner workings of the music business is totally “accurate,” although its timeline may be a bit off.
“It’s the record business circa, let’s say, 1996 to 2005. That’s exactly how it was. Exactly,” she told host Nancy Redd.
“Empire” also nails its portrayal of the behind-the-scenes drama of the music scene, Braxton added.
“Not the talent part, [but] the music business. How it’s about sales and how… the talent is always important, but the sales [are] how the talent stays out there…” she said. “That’s all very very accurate.”
When it comes to ranking her favorite show on the air these days, Braxton says she’s torn between “Empire” and another buzzy new series, “Black-ish.”
“I love [‘Empire’]. Cookie is my favorite character,” she said. “I love Taraji [P. Henson.] She’s talented but I’m always twisted because I have to go between that and ‘Black-ish,’ between ‘Empire’ and ‘Black-ish,’ those are my two favorite shows.”
