VidCon Takes Over Anaheim, Proves The Internet Is Taking Over The World

Comic-Con ended just over a week ago, but that’s already ancient history for the masses currently converging on Anaheim for VidCon. Like other fan conventions, VidCon is a utopia for those interested in a particular subculture — in this case, YouTube and its myriad well-known personalities. Unlike other fan conventions, its devotees are overwhelmingly teen- and tweenage.

“Vlogbrothers” John and Hank Green conceived of and hosted the first VidCon in 2010, and since then, the event has grown from 1,400 attendees to an estimated 18,000. Though Internet videos may sometimes seem like time-killing diversions, the influence of online content creators is no joke. According to a 2014 study, millennials spend an average of 11.3 hours per week watching online videos.
