Iyanla Vanzant is in Atlanta working with 44-year-old video producer Jay Williams, a man who has fathered 34 children with 17 different women. In an attempt to heal the underlying issues behind his reckless behavior, Iyanla has had explosive conversations with Jay as well as the women who, as Iyanla puts it, have been “man-sharing.”
Two of the women, Nicole and Charmaine, are former best friends. Nicole has one child with Jay and says she has been in an on-again-off-again relationship with him for 14 years. Though Charmaine knew her friend was involved with him, Charmaine also began seeing Jay and had three children with him. The betrayal tore the women’s friendship apart — but in the above video, it’s clear that neither woman is ready to let go of the man who came between them.
In the preview clip from part 3 of “Iyanla: Fix My Life,” Charmaine presses Jay for answers about his relationship with Nicole.
“Is she your girlfriend, now?” she asks Jay.
“I feel Nicole and I are straddling the fence,” Jay says. Charmaine replies that it’s a yes or no question.
“Yes, to the relationship,” he says.
It’s not the answer Charmaine expected to hear. Just two weeks earlier, Charmaine says she and Jay were having their own relationship conversations. Quickly, Iyanla moves past the he said, she said and asks the bigger question.
“Why would you ever consider being in a relationship with him?” Iyanla asks Charmaine.
Charmaine admits there is a fantasy aspect. “There’s a part of me that wants to be with my children’s father, that wants that whole thing,” she says.
Iyanla has some advice for Charmaine. “Get over it,” she says. “Look at me –- get over it!”
“He’s your children’s father, he ain’t your man,” Iyanla says.
