Publisher and developer Atari has partnered with diner Denny’s for a summer promotion, and it’s as great as you’d expect.
Atari has remade three of its classic games with themes having to do with the diner and its food. Asteroids, Centipede, and Breakout all got a breakfast makeover. You can play Hashteroids, Centipup, and Take-Out on the Denny’s mobile app now.
Why would Atari do something like this? Well, Atari hopes that it will help classic games reach a new audience. CEO Fred Chesnais explains, “Transforming our classic and beloved games into a retro, remixed promotion will be a natural way to expose our brand to a new generation and resonate with our long-time fans in a fun and unique way.”
In Hashteroids, “You’re aboard the SS Denny’s Condiment Transport ship and the mission is clear: deliver 40 tons of condiments to the 4th planet in sector 7d.”
Centipup involves an intrepid boy and his journey with syrup: “Once upon a time, a young boy named Danny came across a bottle of syrup and with just a slight squeeze the bottle’s sticky contents had the power to turn anyone or anything into a fried egg.”
Finally, you wreak destruction on Denny’s food in Take-Out: “A wall made entirely of delicious Denny’s breakfast items appears blocking all the take-out orders from their rightful owners. The only way to feed customers is to break down that wall!”
Recently, Atari announced that it’s working on getting back into the hardware space. The company is currently discussing wearable game technology and other non-console systems.
This partnership with Denny’s makes me wonder, what other classic or modern games would be great to combine with food? Would you play Left for Bread or Call of Duty: Snack Ops? Tell us your pitches for food and games mashups in the comments!
